A Journey Back to Kumauni Roots | Kumauni Food And Culture

Dr. Sandeep Lohani

After years away from my homeland, I finally returned to the land that raised me - my Uttarakhand, my Kumaun. When I came back to Kumaun, I saw much has changed over time. The way people live, dress, work - even their daily routines everything seemed to have shifted with time. But in the midst of all this transformation, one thing stood still- Kumauni cuisine, preserving the essence of who we are.

That realization hit me deep. Despite modern influences and the ever-evolving lifestyle, our traditional food still flourish. It stuck me that Kumauni dishes aren’t just food, they’re memories, emotions, and stories passed down through generations.

I’ve spoken with many local people, from elders to youngsters, and every conversation had one thing in common: pride. Pride in the flavors of our childhood, pride in the meals our grandmothers made, and pride in preserving something so pure, so rich in essence.

What fills me with even more joy is how these traditions are still being passed on one generation to the next generation. Mothers teaching daughters, grandparents telling stories around cooking fires, and young chefs learning the beauty of slow-cooked simplicity.

In a fast-paced world, Kumaoni cuisine reminds us to slow down and fully savor the experience. It rekindled my hope and strength to work for my roots, and to truly admire, appreciate, and celebrate the richness of Kumaoni cuisine.

With pride in my heart for Uttarakhand I see an opportunity and a responsibility. If I ever get the chance to work deeply in the field of Kumauni cuisine, I would embrace it with both hands. Not just as a professional, but as a son of this soil who wants to celebrate what makes our region so unique.
